Genetically Programmed for Envy

Exhibition 31 August - 11 September 2004

From a rapidly expanding industry that markets itself within a cultural landscape of consumer capitalism, technological development and liberal individualism, we are shaping our bodies in very specific manners, conforming to a defined sense of ‘normal’ and legitimised through the rhetoric of choice.

Yet the growth of the appearance medicine industry is possibly as much to do with the power of consumerism, insatiable desire and status anxiety as the power of normalisation.

Are we genetically programmed for envy?
